Città Sant'Angelo: A Gem in Abruzzo

Città Sant'Angelo is often mentioned as one of the "Borghi più belli d'Italia" (the most beautiful villages in Italy) and even made it onto Forbes' list of the best places to live in the world. Perched on a hill in the Abruzzo region, it offers a stunning double panorama: the sparkling Adriatic Sea to the east and the snow-capped peaks of the Gran Sasso and Maiella mountains to the west.

History

The town's roots go back to the ancient Vestini tribe and the Roman settlement of Angulum. It was later shaped by the Lombards, who introduced the cult of Saint Michael the Archangel (the town's patron saint).

Destruction and rebirth: In 1240, the city was destroyed by the forces of Frederick II due to its loyalty to the Pope, but was quickly rebuilt into the fortified, semi-circular layout seen today.

"Carboneria": In 1814, it was a hotbed of the Carboneria, the secret societies that sparked the Italian Risorgimento (unification).

Description: Your dream holiday base

Città Sant'Angelo is the quintessential Italian holiday destination for those seeking authenticity over tourist traps. The historic centre is a maze of "rue" (narrow alleys) and elegant villas and palazzi gentilizi (noble palaces) that bear witness to its rich agricultural past.

If you're looking for a holiday home, you'll find everything from luxury villas with private pools surrounded by olive groves to charming palazzo apartments in the heart of the medieval walls. Many villas in the area are designed for a "slow life" stay, with sun-drenched terraces, saltwater pools and outdoor barbecue areas - perfect for a long holiday in the Abruzzo sun.

Typical foods

The town is a certified "Cittaslow" (Slow Food City) with a focus on high-quality local produce.

Arrosticini: The region's crown jewel - thin skewers of grilled mutton or lamb, traditionally cooked over a "canala" (narrow charcoal grill).

Pasta alla Mugnaia: A local specialty consisting of long, hand-pulled, single-strand pasta seasoned with a rich beef dragù.

Maccheroni alla Chitarra: Square-edged pasta made with a wire-stringed utensil called a "chitarra".

Oil & Wine: Known as the "City of Oil and Wine", it produces exceptional extra virgin olive oil and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo red wines.

Activities & Festivals

Historical exploration: Visit the Collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo, famous for its 14th-century portico and 47-meter-high bell tower.

Shopping: For a modern break, Sant'Angelo Village Outlet offers exclusive Italian fashion at discounted prices.

Carnival of 'Ndirucce: A lively February festival with satirical poems in the local dialect and colorful parades.

Summer events: July and August are filled with food festivals (Sagre), outdoor concerts, and the "Dall'Etna al Gran Sasso" fair, celebrating the twin cultures of Sicily and Abruzzo.

Nature

Città Sant'Angelo is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts.

Calanchi di Atri: Just a short drive away is this regional nature reserve with dramatic "badlands" (clay erosions) that resemble a lunar landscape.

Torre del Cerrano: A 16th-century coast guard tower surrounded by a protected marine park with pristine beaches and pine forests.

Mountains: In less than an hour you can reach the Gran Sasso National Park for hiking, skiing or high-altitude trekking.
